The position is formally based at our headquarters in Gothenburg, but for the right profile we are open to locations outside of Gothenburg with occasional visits onsite.

Represent Mölnlycke as a subject matter expert, for example, in external networks, committees, and scientific forums.
Provide coaching and guidance to Biocompatibility Specialists, fostering capability growth in the team.

What You Bring
We are looking for someone with deep expertise in biocompatibility and/or toxicology who thrives on both scientific rigor and practical application.

Must-haves:
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, life science or equivalent.
Extensive experience in biocompatibility, toxicology, or a closely related field.
Experience working with medical devices.
Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements relevant to biocompatibility.
Excellent communication skills, fluent in written and spoken English.


Nice-to-haves:

Responsibilities
The role of Senior Scientist is a laboratory-based position supporting the characterization of molecular interactions in drug discovery, with a focus on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and other biophysical techniques. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated biophysicist with deep expertise in SPR assay development, method optimization, and screening to join our team on a one-year contract basis. The ideal candidate will have a strong theoretical and practical background in biophysical techniques, particularly SPR, along with experience in protein-ligand interactions. Ph.D. or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field with a focus on biophysical techniques to characterize molecular interactions, preferably SPR (or something similar system)
Proficiency with surface-based biosensor platforms (e.g., Biacore, Nicoya, Octet, WAVEsystem) including assay development and optimization.
Expertise in developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing biosensor assays for high-throughput screening and kinetic data analysis, with proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Biacore Insight, WAVEcontrol) and protein sample preparation to ensure high-quality samples for biophysical studies.
Familiarity with complementary biophysical methods such as ITC, MST or DSF as well as protein expression, purification, and characterization techniques to ensure optimal sample quality for biophysical assays.
Proven reputation gained through an excellent track record of publications and/or conference presentations.

You will apply CRISPR editing and learn how to assess editing efficiency and cell health. Downstream work would encompass applying a cellular differentiation protocol to validate the functional consequence of a specific genetic modification. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms behind GPR75 activity and its role in protecting against diabetes and obesity-related disease

Do you want to impact early drug discovery by investigating molecular function of drug targets and help drive the development of life-changing medicines? Then AstraZeneca might be of interest to you!

We have a great opportunity for a master’s student to investigate the biological function and mechanism of a promising drug target: an orphan GPCR with previously unknown function.

Project information:
Approximately 35% of all approved drugs target G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) (1). GPR75 is an orphan G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR), where loss-of-function mutations were found  to be strongly correlated with protection from obesity and diabetes, and studies in genetic knock-out mice show that loss of GPR75 function protects against high-fat diet induces weight gain (2). In a collaboration with Regeneron, AstraZeneca aim to develop GPR75 antagonists as a therapeutic against diabetes and other obestiy-related and metabolic diseases (3).

The aim of this project is to use available tools to investigate the downstream signalling of GPR75, looking at G-protein signalling assays and receptor localization to further understand the mode-of-action of potential drugs targeting this receptor.

Responsibilities
In this project you will learn about the concept of GPCR biology and use a variety of methods and tools to investigate downstream G-protein signalling. On a daily basis you will work in the Cellular Assay Development team with colleagues/experts working on developing cellular assays using state-of-the-art technologies to support drug discovery projects.

You will gain experience and practical independency in techniques/skills such as experimental design and assay development, functional reporter assays, confocal imaging, cell culturing, cell transfection, compound screening and thesis writing. You will independently be conducting laboratory work, analyse data and present findings to your peers, and you will have the opportunity to actively and critically participate in the high-value research to understand underlying biology of a therapeutic drug target, potentially leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals.

 Tssue clearing and immunolabeling of kidney, heart , and liver to enable 3D organ imaging

Do you have experience of and interest in working with histology? Would you like to develop tissue clearing protocols for whole organ imaging ? Then this Master thesis project at AstraZeneca might be of interest to you!

You will join Cell and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) team that delivers key data within histology, imaging, biomarker, FACS and bioassay automation to Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) disease areas. Within the histology group we are at the scientific forefront of latest histology technique and image analyses. 



Responsibilities
State- of- Art tissue clearing combined with fluorescent labelling (tissue structures/compounds/antibodies/proteins/cells) and imaging can provide valuable visualization of 3D structure together with target distribution through whole organ. 

3D organ imaging is hampered due to low light penetration through the tissue. Major cause of low tissue transparency is light scattering caused by organ components such as lipids, pigments and collagen fibers. By using optical clearing agents (OCAs) these disturbing components are removed from the tissue, leading to improvement of light penetration and increasing tissue transparency and enabling whole organ imaging.

The  goal of thesis is to optimize clearing protocol to achieve tissue transparency and  multiplex fluorescent labelling in diverse mouse organs to enable 3D imaging 

As master student you will be a part of our histology team and learn about tissue fixation, processing, labelling, and imaging.

Collaborate with the internal teams in locating samples and reviewing consent for requests related to HBS in AZ.
Assist in knowledge curation to allow decision making on inventory which maybe in AZ, or third parties. Duties may include handling of HBS during the reconciliation and curation process.
Work with the Biobank lead to ensure that learning from HBS related issues are identified and analysed to enable continuous process improvement.

Receive and register incoming HBS
Process requests for HBS to customers

Qualifications
Minimum experience:
You should ideally have a degree in a Bioscience or Chemistry discipline and previous experience of laboratory work handling biological samples. Previous knowledge and experience of biobanking is preferred. Experience of working with various IT solutions, including extensive knowledge of Excel, LIMS systems and database usage, is also a clear advantage.

This experience will cover all relevant aspects from hypothesis generation, through experimental design and execution, large scale RNA and DNA extraction, sample and library preparation, sequencing, data handling, post sequencing QC and trouble shooting.

Contingent Worker Role Descriptors – Covid-19 Assessment Laboratory Scientist
This facility will be used for high throughput screening for COVID-19 screening of AstraZeneca Key Workers.

Staff within this laboratory will be expected to work a shift pattern to enable 16 hours a day operation across 5 days a week – Tuesday to Saturday and some weeks Mondays as well.
Hours are 7am-4pm, 8:30am-5:30pm or 12pm-9pm in a shifted pattern.

This work is performed in the Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) containment facilities with appropriate PPE. This work is performed at Biological Safety Level 1 (BSL1) laboratory with appropriate PPE. Applicants should be comfortable performing this process while using PPE.

Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include: visually inspecting specimens for packaging integrity (correct intact number of barrier layers, no evidence of leakage/spillage); assessment suitability (e.g., rejecting samples not properly labelled, containing foreign matter, incorrect volumes etc.); ensuring they are accounted for on the specimen manifest; following inspection, scanning into LIMS system; and transfer to racks for further processing in suitably contained liquid handling automation. Tube to plate transfer, sample lysis and inactivation will be performed on the automation, and once completed the plates will be transferred to the adjacent molecular biology laboratories. On occasion this process may be run manually requiring experience with manual pipetting. You will be joining one of 4 in vitro teams within the department that is currently supporting both early and late stage respiratory projects.

Responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the team you will execute in vitro experiments as well as support analysis from both in vitro and in vivo studies to progress our drug discovery projects and publishable scientific insights. You are encouraged to actively take part of scientific discussion to add valuable input in experiment design, data interpretation to drive projects and techniques.

This is a lab-based role where you will be involved in multiple ongoing projects with responsibility to analyse samples from experiments/studies from various cells and tissues for both in vitro-, in vivo- and from patient studies. We are looking for someone with experience in immunoassays (such as ELISA, MSD, etc), preparation of RNA from cells and tissues, expression analysis (Taqman) and Western blots.

Essential Requirements

Experimental experience in the bioanalysis of RNA or proteins (eg Taqman, ELISAs, MSDs) and in the culturing of mammalian cells
Good social and communication skills and to be a strong team player.
Candidates should be able to work independently, take own initiatives and have a positive, goal oriented and problem solving attitude.
Good organisational skills are required
Excellent English is required, both spoken and in writing.

Experimental experience in the in vitro manipulation of cells eg using siRNA, antibodies, small molecules

For this project, you will join Cell and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) team that delivers key data within histology, imaging, biomarker, FACS and bioassay automation to Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) disease areas. Within the histology group we are at the scientific forefront of latest histology technique and image analyses. 

Responsibilities
State- of- Art tissue clearing combined with fluorescent labelling (tissue structures/compounds/antibodies/proteins/cells) and imaging can provide valuable visualization of 3D structure together with target distribution through whole organ. 
3D organ imaging is hampered due to low light penetration through the tissue. Major cause of low tissue transparency is light scattering caused by organ components such as lipids, pigments and collagen fibers. By using optical clearing agents (OCAs) these disturbing components are removed from the tissue, leading to improvement of light penetration and increasing tissue transparency and enabling whole organ imaging.


The  goal of thesis is to develop tissue clearing protocol to achieve tissue transparency while preserving organ morphology and fluorescent labelling for kidney, heart and liver. 


As master student you will be a part of our histology team and learn about tissue fixation, processing, labelling, and imaging.

Responsibilities
Working collaboratively in drug discovery projects alongside mechanistic and structural biologists, protein scientists, biopharma bioscientists and chemists with responsibility for the protein structure aspect within a drug discovery project. The role also includes you to develop crystal systems enabling iterative structure based drug design programs, fragment based lead discovery and mode of action studies. You will support multiple crystallization projects in parrellel, work closely with other crystallographers as part of a dynamic team enviroment.

Other responsilities:
Perform crystallization screening of proteins, protein ligands complexes, biological macromolecules and biological macromolecule complexes.
Collect X-ray data using a number of synchrotron beamlines.
Support ’in crystal’ fragment screens, HTS read out, and other hit finding strategies.
Identify improvements and innovations in crystallization techniques.
Work as a team player to ensure delivery of quality leads for projects.


Qualifications
Essential in the role:
Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline or a BSc/MSc degree with significant proven experience, preferably in the Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology industry.
Expertise in protein crystallisation and X-ray data collection.

Independent analysis and evaluation of complex data and delivery of data to agreed timelines.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, arising from perturbed protein homeostasis, activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) that leads to a myriad of downstream cellular events. We believe that dysregulation or defective UPR responses plays an important role in chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD or IPF. This project aims to investigate and modulate the UPR pathway activation in primary lung cells of different origin to identify the major cell types targeted by ER stress and its specific downstream UPR responses.

Responsibilities
In this placement, the student will be part of a cross-functional team within Research and Early Development, Respiratory and Immunology (R&I), building scientific knowledge around disease-causing molecular mechanisms and identification of novel targets for treatment. Specifically, the student will be working closely with a team investigating the role of ER stress in COPD and IPF.

This facility will be used for high throughput screening for COVID-19 screening of AstraZeneca Key Workers. Staff within this laboratory will be expected to work a shift pattern to enable 16 hours a day operation across 5 days a week – Tuesday to Saturday and some weeks Mondays as well. Responsibilities
This role covers responsibilities in two main areas: the Sample Handling Laboratories and the Molecular Biology Laboratories. Applicants can specify a preference to work in either area, or to flex across both.

Qualifications
Sample Handling: Scientists working in the Sample handling Laboratories are responsible for all process stages from arrival of human assessment specimens (currently saliva or nasal swabs) at the sample handling labs to the transfer of virally inactivated samples to the adjacent molecular biology labs. This work is performed to Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) in LAF containment facilities with appropriate PPE. Prior experience of working with infectious biological material to BS2 and with PPE is a key requirement for working in the sample handling laboratories.

Primary responsibilities include: visually inspecting specimens for packaging integrity (correct intact number of barrier layers, no evidence of leakage/spillage); assessment suitability (e.g., rejecting samples not properly labelled, containing foreign matter, incorrect volumes etc.); ensuring they are accounted for on the specimen manifest; following inspection, the removal of specimen transport tubes from the kit packaging; scanning into the LIMS system; and transfer to racks for further processing in suitably contained liquid handling automation. Tube to plate transfer, sample lysis and inactivation will be performed on the automation, and once completed the plates will be transferred to the adjacent molecular biology laboratories. On occasion this process may be run manually requiring experience with manual pipetting. Individuals will receive full technical and safety training for this whole process which will be performed to strictly defined COVID-19 specific SOPs.

Key Requirements for this role:
Work in BSL2 lab with pervious experience of aseptic technique preferred.
Work with human biological specimens. HepB Vaccination advised.
Work with infectious samples, ideally experience that may contain SARS-Cov-2 would be desirable

Molecular Biology: Scientists working in the Molecular Biology Laboratories are responsible for all process stages from fully automated RNA extraction and RT-PCR workflows to the delivery of PCR based results to data analysts. This work is performed to Biological Safety Level 1 (BSL1) with appropriate PPE. Applicants should be comfortable performing this process while using PPE.

Primary responsibilities include: the operation of Beckman I series robotics to perform automated magnetic bead RNA extraction procedures; tracking samples through the LIMS system; RT-PCR reaction setup including manual pipetting as well as automated plate preparation using benchtop automation equipment; setting up molecular assays on qPCR instruments; and inspection and exporting of primary and QC results for subsequent downstream analysis by Data/QC analysts. Introduction
Vascular anomalies (VAs) are a group of rare diseases defined by malformed blood or lymph vessels. For these dysfunctions effective pharmaceutical treatments are lacking, which causes  chronic pain, disabilities, and sudden death in patients. We aim to address this unmet medical need by uncovering core mechanisms of disease initiation and maintenance and leveraging this information for establishing novel therapeutic strategies for VAs. Our pre-clinical studies, testing identified treatment strategies are relevant for VAs and for understanding aberrant vascular function in vascular-related diseases.

We are working with cutting-edge technologies including next-generation sequencing, CRISPR-Cas genome editing, generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and animal models and in vivo phage display to identify endothelial targets.

This position is within the Transgenic Mouse Model group which is part of the Discovery Biology (DB) department. Within the Transgenic unit, we aim  to be at the scientific forefront of generating and phenotypically characterizing transgenic mouse models as well as  performing world leading science and innovation.

Responsibilities
The main focus of the role will be to perform studies in complex cellular models expressing mutated genes important in vascular disease progression. These cell models will include CRISPR-Cas9 mutated iPSCs differentiated to relevant cellular types. We will use these cells to screen hundreds of AstraZeneca compounds which are relevant to the biochemical pathways important in vascular and cancer biology to try and identify compounds which are capable of preventing or slowing the progression of disease. 
 
Main duties are to run cellular assays using a large panel of small molecules specific to AstraZeneca and to collate and present the data.. Furthermore, we are planning to run cell based assay to test interesting compounds conjugated to small targeting peptides.

In fact, upon injury, the human heart has a limited capacity for repair and regeneration (Liu et al., Nature Biomedical Engineering, 2018). In this placement, you will be involved in a therapeutic-oriented project (translational research). As a Senior Scientist in the Biomarker team, you will play a key role from preclinical to clinical biomarker delivery for progressing projects and science. You will be responsible for delivering high quality and robust biomarker data package to support project progression across the CVRM project portfolio. This involves implementation of novel biomarker methods, e.g. ligand binding approaches using state of the art analytical techniques, biomarker analysis, reporting biomarker data and evaluation to the project teams. Opportunity: We have an exciting opportunity for a master’s student to investigate modulation of pain signalling pathways through the nerve growth factor (NGF). The student will build and run reporter assays in cell-lines that will verify how modulatory small molecules are affecting the NGF signalling. We have intriguing preliminary data that implies that we are affecting pathways that have not previously been described in the context of NGF signalling. 

Background: Inhibition of NGF signalling by monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are more efficient than opioids in relieving pain. The mAbs have, however, serious side effects in joint destruction, limiting their clinical use. We have strong reasons to believe that NGF signalling modulating small molecules will not have these side effects and the proposed work will investigate in detail how the small molecules are modulating the NGF signalling.

Job description
The Discovery Sciences, Translational Genomics department is looking for a senior research scientist  to be part of our in vivo physiology discipline within the Transgenic Models team. This position is based at the AstraZeneca R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden and we are seeking a scientific and technical specialist in the animal in vivo physiology field. This is a consultant assignment, starting immediately.   

Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities
Work in the in vivo physiology discipline with full engagement with stakeholders to ensure the discipline operates at the scientific forefront, using world leading technologies and infrastructure to support all core disease areas
Support projects and studies and ensure that they are conducted with quality, dedication and data delivered according to stipulated time lines and project requirements
Compile, interpret, present and discuss data with key project teams and stakeholders
Actively promote the in vivo physiology discipline activities to ensure visibility in the wider AstraZeneca organization
Hands on activity in the lab when required for timely project progression


Qualifications
As a successful candidate you are experimentally focused, with strong troubleshooting skills and make significant contributions to the practical delivery of projects related to murine in vivo experimentation. You will have good social and communication skills, be collaborative and be a strong team player. Candidates should be able to work independently and have a positive, goal oriented and problem-solving attitude. Good organizational skills are required and you should be comfortable in presenting your results. Excellent English is required, both spoken and written.


Minimum Requirements: Education and Experience
You should have a relevant scientific degree or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline. Relevant experience in drug discovery would be an advantage.


The following skills would be an advantage:
Experience in metabolic phenotyping platforms and analysis of metabolic function in mouse models e.g. performing indirect calorimetry and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (IPGTT) to diagnose metabolic function in genetically-engineered mice, phenotyping platforms such as hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps.
Expertise in the characterization of transgenic animal models
